Purpose: Reshoring is a new phenomenon including back-reshoring and near-reshoring. From economic and political perspective, this topic gained interests. However, there is little study about determinants and results of reshoring . The purpose of this paper is to explore the reasons for reshoring.
Design/methodology/approach: In order to understand the reasons for near-reshoring, the paper collected data from 215 French firms in spring 2016. There are 197 companies which sourcing manufactured products from China.
Findings: There is a growing trend for near-reshoring. Based on our data, half of the companies sourcing in China previously chose near-reshore its supply of certain goods initially bought in China in the past few years. Meanwhile, 10 per cent of companies plan to near-reshoring soon. The authors determine main motives for near-reshoring and show that companies having reshored are very satisfied in terms of product quality, responsiveness between order and delivery, responsiveness between design and production, and in terms of total cost of ownership too.
